Gertrude Stanton Käsebier (1852–1934): The Most Influential Female Photographer of the 20th Century. Gertrude took up photography in middle age and was soon praised by the renowned promoter Alfred Stieglitz as “beyond dispute the leading portrait photographer in this country.”

Gertrude Käsebier left her husband when she was already 37 years old. At that time, she was already considered an old woman. Gertrude’s circle decided that the girl had gone crazy, but this was a turning point in her life. It was during this period that Gertrude Käsebier seriously took up photography. In 1894, she began studying photography in Germany and France.

She took up photography professionally in 1895. Very soon her photo portraits in the pictorialism style (a combination of photography and painting) became very popular.
