Morphine Addicts

Morphine addicts or “Morphine Players”, pre-revolutionary post card by Albert Matignon, 1905. The French artist, born in 1869, was an active participant in the Parisian artistic community.

The canvas depicts young women immersed in a state of drug trance. Their faces express a mixture of pleasure and aloofness, as if they are in their own world, where there is no place for reality. Matignon did not stay indifferent to this problem and decided to capture it on his canvas to show the public what tragic consequences drug addiction can lead to.
