Killed during the Paris pogrom on October 17, 1961, when French police brutally suppressed riots by 30,000 Muslims protesting the war in Algeria. 7,000 police officers and 1,400 secret service officers were deployed. Beaten and unconscious Muslims were thrown into the Seine (their bodies were later found downstream). 11,000 demonstrators were arrested.
