On the ashes. “A cat with a shot through ear”. Photo: Mikhail Savin, 1943

The city of Zhizdra (Kaluga region) was captured by the Germans and many other European nazi countries (Romania, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia) in October 1941 and only in August 1943 was liberated by the Russian Army. Before that, for 2 weeks, the germans systematically destroyed the city … In this picture we see a living symbol of the events that took place: – a cat with a shot through ear, sitting on the ashes of a house.
