The most expensive photographs from Russia.

In 2013, a collection of works by Russian photographers was auctioned at Sotheby’s in London, providing a glimpse into everyday life at the time. This photograph by Yevgeny Mokhorev[1] “Azis”, from the series “Teenagers of St. Petersburg”, is dated 1996. It was sold in a lot with seven other works by the author for 5,000 pounds sterling.

  1. Yevgeny Mokhorev is a Russian photographer. He became a professional photographer in 1986. Two years later he joined the well known photo club “Zerkalo” or “Mirror” where he met Alexey Titarenko and other photographers that influenced him. He has participated in more than 40 events, both in Russia and abroad, including Ballet Royal: Arithmetic of the Ideal, a collaboration between Mokhorev and the Mariinsky Ballet, and is a well-known photographer in St. Petersburg. His work has exhibited in several countries, including the US, Britain in 2009, and in early 2010 in Copenhagen. His distinctive black and white style set in urban landscapes has been said to depict “the Russian soul”. ↩︎

  1. Hi Sergei, totally unrelated subject.
Could you help me with getting my “like” and “comment” features back on my posts? They seem to have disappeared, at least from my posts I see on the phone.
    Many thanks, christian

    1. Absolutely, I can, I had a preliminary look at of your blog (https://chrislh.wordpress.com), and did not see any problems with “like/comment” functions. All works at my end, You probably resolved it. :-) But, just one thing – If you looking for “lost” comments please have a look in your blog’s spam folder/page, by logging in to your WordPress blog NOT in “Jetpack” application on your mobile devices. Sorry, took me long to reply to you, it’s a big time difference between US and AU.

I absolutely don’t know what’s going on. Looking at my blog on my iPhone via the WP app I see no “like” or “comment symbols, I used to, but….
I’ll have to check on my PC again. Last time I did, there was the “like” feature but no “comments”
        Crazy!🤪
        Thanks again, christian

  2. Thanks for posting and writing about this.
I remember the great joy and excitement I felt when, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. and the rise of the internet Russian photography and Russian photographers became easily accessible, and I followed sites like Live Journal and Photosight RU (sp?) in those days one often had to scan prints in order to post photos, and the resulting comments often turn into thoughtful conversations. I even had a cover photo and main write up with my photos in a leading Russian photo magazine, and there are Russian photographers with whom I keep in touch to this day. World politics and the internet have not been kind to us in these matters, and much goodwill, hope and joy and open and enriching conversations have been destroyed and lost!

    1. What a wonderful comment, Thank you Christian! At times I look for some ideas, inspiration here – IMGSRC , but mostly I still remember advice given to me by wonderful Vladimir Lagrange on how to be honest, genuine/authentic working in documentary genre from field to darkroom, actually Christian, what scanner(s) did you use then and do you have copy of that magazine or a photo you got published, I would love to see it, if possible? Again, what a nice reminicent comment, it is so good to be building, discovering new, connecting and making friends. Sadly, it is so easy to destroy …

          1. Thanks for your kind words Sergei! It was great to get that opportunity, it came about because I was corresponding with a young Brit living in Paris who was a wonderful photographer. She established a relationship with the mag and its editor and wound up teaching a workshop in Moscow, and also recommended me to the editor. Yes, it was a congenial, creative and productive time!😊

            1. In my understanding, you (in your work at list) as a strong proponent of a very popular stile in photography “Pictorialism” and deserve much more recondition. I would love to find my self in this line, at some point, sooner or later. But in any case I treasure my acquaintances with artists of your caliber, and very humbled with you spending time communicating with me. Thank you Sir Harkness :-)

              1. Hi Sergei,
                Many thanks for your kindness!
I have ‘aged out’ of being able to properly manage my blog from my phone, just lost a reply to you!
So, please bear with me and don’t think it’s personal if I don’t respond or otherwise do something strange!
Many thanks and best wishes, Christian

      2. Sorry, I forgot to reply to your scanner question.
I don’t remember the model, but I have always just used flat bed Epson photo scanners, still do.
