I submitted this three portraits to monthly competition in my photography club. But, I also would like to know what you think, so please give your critical thinking some freedom here. I’ll thank you for it.

  1. Thank you so much for your most generous reply to my comment Sergei!
I am not as nimble as I used to be and working the WP blog from my tiny IPhone certainly is a challenge.
But again, it is great to see your work.
I’m not sure photos turn out the way we hoped, most of the time. I am finding a little distance does wonders and makes us delight in our work again and realize how interesting it is and how good it was to have done it!
    With best wishes, christian.

  2. Hi Sergei,
I commented a few days ago, but don’t see it, so I assume my ‘nimble’ fingers must have pushed or not pushed on the wrong place of my screen!
My apologies, for your work is super and deserves comment.
I am delighted that many did respond. I will try and send feedback later!
    Best wishes, christian

    1. Just found your comments in spam folder … :-( I do not know why. Thank you Christian and I am very sorry for this publishing error, it is very annoying.

  3. late to comment – but loving the 3rd one – there’s something about the blood-red lips and the fur-lined hat that combine to scream “violence” and yet the whole image is actually very sedate – it’s a nice paradox… the diamond ring is good too (probably her own not a prop – but it helps create a story about who the axe is for – husband / mistress / etc). 4. Sergei, these are wonderful portraits, and I think ‘liking’ one over the other just depends on one’s personal taste, not your skill as a photographer!
Having said that, I am not a fan of formal studio portraits, and prefer work like that of, for example, Jacques Olivar, but again there is too much professional work involved, they just seem more casual, and I have always admired the work of Rodney Smith who is said to have gone to work just with his 35mm camera and a roll of film in his pocket!
    Cheers! Chris

    1. Thank you Christian for your very kind comments, … very humbling. Yes, I think, I am influenced by and love Jacques Olivar work … I was trying to do something like this beautiful environmental portrait:

Monica Bellucci – Arles. Photography by Jacques Olivar. Published here without permission, for reference purposes only. Thank you Mr. Olivar

But, I was not completely happy with what I got, and unfortunately was not able to get a natural look I was imagining … In the studio, no natural light. But, I did learn something from two hour long process, and almost all of it was good. :-)

Thank you for commenting again a spatially that I discover one more absolutely wonderful photographer Rodney Smith I so thankful to you Christian for commenting here! :-)

PS. For all interested in art of photography please see Christian’s page for some wonderful photographers and they works of art!

  5. I am especially drawn to the portrait in the middle. Great lighting/shading. The highlights and movement through her hair are fantastic.

  9. I like the first two better than the third, no shock there. Like the black background, the minimalism. And you should post more of your own work on here.

    1. Thank you Chuck. Yes, will do more of my photography.

Yes, love minimalism, but it is bloody difficult, but such tremendous fun, if it works. :-)

  10. Hey Sergei, for me, the second one is by far the best – look, composition, pose, etc. The color photo is also beautiful, but it still needs a small adjustment in the shadows and highlights: the skin stands out a bit too much and the eyes are just a bit too dark. But, who am I, the best thing is to go for what you think looks best. Good luck!

    1. Thank you Marc, Yes I agree, I was trying to do very simple, rough, and countryside like (rustic look) in the colour one. Will work on it more.

Mark – I appreciate, value and respect your opinion very much! :-)

  11. Hi dear Sergei, these three photographs are beautiful. Especially in B&W. But who I am that I can make a critical comment. Just I can share this about them. When I looked at them, I noticed that all of them are trying to say something.. The lip movements looked the same to me and It makes me wonder what they are saying or what they will say. This brings an action to the photographs. Good Luck for the competition. Thank you, Love, nia
