Moisei Solomonovich Nappelbaum (1869-1958), one of Russia’s greatest photographer portraitist, created portraits of politicians, scientists, artists, sculptors, poets, composers, and actors in his studio on Nevsky Prospect[1].

In his works, with skilful usage of light, Nappelbaum placed the most important emphasis on the human face.

  1. Nevsky Prospect is a main street located in the federal city of St. Petersburg in Russia. Its name comes from the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the monastery which stands at the eastern end of the street, and which commemorates the Russian hero Prince Saint Alexander Nevsky. Following his founding of Saint Petersburg in 1703, Tsar Peter I planned the course of the street as the beginning of the road to Novgorod and Moscow. ↩︎

    1. Thank you, John. I love his work, and I wish to be able to take portraits as good as he did … I have this list here, just a bit of it: “I would like to take portraits as good as Alfred Stieglitz and Moisei Solomonovich Nappelbaum, and as romantic as Alice Boughton, photo reportage as good as Vladimir Lagrange“, etc… My wishful thinking for next life, hey? :-)
