The Codex Gigas, known as the Devil’s Bible, is the largest and most mysterious manuscript in the world. Written in Latin in the 13th century, the meter-long manuscript requires two people to lift and more than 160 skins were used to create the book.

According to legend, the Codex was written in just one night by a monk condemned to be walled up alive, with the help of the devil. However, researchers believe that the work took at least 25 years. Today the manuscript is kept in the National Library of Sweden (Stockholm) and has been fully digitised for study.

  3. Dear Sergei, seems really like a science fiction or how can I explain I don’t know, but seems like a metaphysical events.. But it is not possible to write the huge book in one night. Legend. Interesting. When I searched about what happened to this monk, I fond these explanation too. You always found interesting events in history. Thank you, again.

The legend states that, as a resident of the Benedictine Monastery of Podlazice, Herman the Recluse was condemned to be walled up alive and starved to death. However, in a plea for his life, he convinced the abbot to let him live if he could create a book that encapsulated all earthly knowledge in one night.

    1. Apparently, just one night. With help of Satan … or, over the period of 25 years if memory serves me right.
